12-Month Reading Challenge for Kids

Have you helped your kids set goals for the new year? Every year, I set a reading goal for myself. I try to read 50 books each year It is a challenge. This year, I am giving my kids a 12-month reading challenge and encouraging them to read 50 books by the end of the year. This is so doable!! It is just about a book each week, since there are 52 weeks in a year. I gave a little wiggle room for the hard days.
For some kids this may not be much of a challenge, but you can make it more of a challenge by helping them choose books that are a little harder than what they may typically read. My son is an avid reader and probably reads 3 times that amount, but this year I am going to challenge him a bit with the books he reads. My daughter reads a lot slower than her older brother, so this will be a great challenge for her!
I made a little printable chart that they can hang on their wall to help them keep on track. Each time they finish a book, they can color in a star. Charts that can be colored in always motivate my kids. To get a copy of the 12-month reading challenge you can save the image above, or click the link for a PDF version of it to download.

Cute idea! Kids always seem to respond best to visualizations of their goals.
I love this idea. My kids are avid readers. We come home from the library with a ton of books all the time. But having a visual goal like this will double the fun of reading! I bet they might even make a competition out of it.
As for me, I’m planning on monopolizing on this idea for helping them practice writing a short summary of each book they read (you know author, illustrator, plot, etc.). Then I’ll compile it in a binder – so it’ll also make a great keepsake for them when they get older! As a bonus, it’ll help them keep track of what they’ve read!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for your comment! Great idea to compile their summaries in a notebook. They will love that!
I love this idea! Our son read 100 books between August and December of 2015 and he was so excited. I wonder what his next goal will be?
I love your idea but my son isn’t as eager about reading as expected so could you suggest interesting books for him, to read he is in grade 5 and that seems to interest him are the “diary of a wimpy kid series” 🙁
Thanks for your website it’s a real bliss!!!
Definitely have some suggestions!! My son is in 5th grade, too. He has loved: How to Train your Dragon series, Percy Jackson series, The 5 Kingdoms series by Brandon Mull, The Candy Shop Wars, Deltora Quest, The Spirit Animals series, The Seekers series, Elementia trilogy, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Leven Thumps, Horrible Histories & The Wingfeather Saga.
Hope this helps!! 🙂
