Artist Study- Jackson Pollock

Recently in our homeschool, we did a Jackson Pollock art lesson. My kids really enjoyed learning about him although they think his art work is a little funny!
We used the book Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists- Jackson Pollock, by Mike Venezia. Â I love these books!
We also use the World’s Greatest Artists curriculum from Confessions of a Homeschooler. It’s free & it’s great!
We found a fun Jackson Pollock website. You can paint in splatters like him all with a click of a mouse.
For another fun Jackson Pollock Style art project, also see our Splat Painting art!
For our Jackson Pollock art project, we painted with eye droppers to simulate his drip paintings. I watered down the paint and the kids squeezed it up with the eye droppers and painted with it.
I love these double sided painted cups! They also have lids for less mess.
It’s a pretty messy painting job- so wear smocks and cover your surface! It’s cold & snowy here or we would have done this one outside!
My kids had such a blast as you can tell by their faces!
I love this picture of my son. It’s when he figured out that he could suck the wet paint back up from the paper & mix the colors. Such excitement!!
A little more about the artist. Paul Jackson Pollock is a famous American painter known for his abstract expressionism style. He was well know for his drip technique. He poured and splattered on large canvases, and murals. In fact, his first wall-sized canvas was named Mural.
Pollock was born in Cody Wyoming in 1912, lived in California and Arizona. Â He began his studies in Los Angeles and later studied in New York City under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League.
You can see some of his work in many museums around the world including the Museum of Modern art in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and many more!
Pollock’s work is a fun one to study with kids because you can really do some action painting with them. Kids will definitely enjoy this form of art!
