Cereal Box Drawbridge STEM

We have this fun book all about bridges that we love. It is full of different bridge projects. I did a post a while back about how we made a popsicle stick bridge. This week we made a cereal box drawbridge to learn about how drawbridges work. It is also a really fun play place for my son and his action figures.
A cereal box bridge is so easy to make! You just need an empty cereal box, string, a straw and something to use to decorate the outside of the box. We covered ours in paper and colored on it with a marker, but it could be painted, too.
First we covered ours with paper and glued it on. We left it to dry. Once the glue is dry, trim off extra paper. Decorate it as desired. We drew on some bricks. If you want the inside to be the same, cut the box first before gluing on the paper.
Cut down the two front sides of the cereal box, but leave the bottom edge attached. Hole punch two holes in the front flap and two holes on the back of the box.
Trim a straw and thread a piece of yarn through the straw. Pot the string through the back two holes leaving the straw on the back side of the box.
Tie the yarn to the other two holes on the front of the drawbridge. Make sure it is long enough to lay flat when opened.
The straw on the back is the handle to pull up the drawbridge.
Now it’s time to play castle!
We also read some books about castles to add a little bit of an educational spin to it! We have two fun castle books: Ms. Frizzle’s Adventures: Medieval Castle & What’s Inside a Castle
I love how you incorporated an activity along with your books! Something I often try to do.
A super project. We used to make all kinds of stuff from cardboard boxes when I was a kid. Used the old Childcraft books.
