Have you heard of the Christmas book called a Christmas Bell for Anya?  It is a beautiful, touching story. I want to tell you little about that book and how it touched our lives. I also have a bell ornament craft to go along with it.

Christmas Bell Book & Craft

A Christmas Bell for Anya is about an 8-year-old girl who lived in Russia in 1917. It was during the reign of the Czars and there was much darkness, violence and tumult. In a small village in Siberia, they were famous for producing the best Christmas bells in all of the world. They were red brass and made such a pure sound! They had a great tradition in their village. Each year, the newest baby boy born would represent the Christ Child and 12 girls would dress as angels and ring in Christmas morning with their bells.

Anya was chosen to be one of these angels and it was a great honor. She and her father etched special words into the bell she would ring. She was so excited to be a part of this ceremony!

A few nights before Christmas an army came and killed many. Anya was among those killed. Her father was left alone and mourned her so deeply!  I will not give away the beautiful ending. You’ll have to read it yourself.

We wanted to make a craft to go along with this beautiful story, so we made some Christmas Bell Ornaments. Hanging the ornaments on the tree will help the kids remember this story and the sweet message of it.

How to Make the Christmas Bell Ornaments:

We made our Christmas Bell ornaments with egg cartons and colored string.

The kids painted them and decorated with glitter~ LOTS of glitter!  I would not recommend using these foam egg cartons since the paint does not stick very well. I ended up adding a layer of watered-down glue to coat the top and keep it secure. This also keeps the glitter on better.

Once they were dried, we poked a hole through the center and tied on a bell.

Knot it to secure it and leave a loop on top to hang on the tree!

These is a video telling the beautiful story of A Christmas Bell for Anya! It is told by the English actress Claire Bloom along with an orchestra.  It’s pretty amazing! Your kids will love the story.
