The Doll People ~ Clothespin Doll Craft

This past month we participated in the Summer Love Books exchange hosted by The  Educator’s Spin on It. We did it last year and had so much fun with it! This year we participated in the chapter book group.  We were paired up with Kara from Simple Kids and she sent us an awesome book and craft to read and do. The book she sent us was The Doll People by Ann Martin and Laura Godwin as well as the materials to do a clothespin doll craft! (Come see even more book activities for kids!)

The Doll People Book and Clothespin Doll Craft

Have you ever read the Doll People?  It is such a cute book!  It is the story of a doll house family. They have to lay perfectly still all day long while the people are awake, but when the people are in bed, they come alive and sing, play, read, and explore. The story is of an old fashioned family who lives by strict doll rules. They have been around for over 100 years. Then a new doll family moves in, the Funcrafts with their own house (in little sister’s room). They do not follow the old fashioned rules and are made of all plastic. We have been having so much fun reading this book together as a family.  My kids & I all love it.

Along with the book, she also sent us some clothespins and stands to make little clothespin dolls. My kids were pretty excited about these because we have never made any clothespin dolls before. I let my kids take over and do these their own way. They painted them and made their little faces.

My daughter decided that her dolls needed to be fairies. So we added pipe cleaner wings to hers. They turned out so cute, and they have been having fun playing with them.

We sent Simple Kids a package with the book The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel by Thornton Burgess. I included some fun activities related to squirrels for her family to do together. Watch her blog for that post!

  1. You received a fun package and did great things with it. I love the fairy dolls. It is so fun that your daughter decided to make them fairies. Our little ones would love to play with those! I enjoyed reading your description of the book. Ours are too young now (at age 3) but, I will look for that when they are older. It sounds very adventurous and fun. Please share this craft on Artsy Play Wednesday (open through Sunday).
