Elementary Writing Curriculum

How do you teach your kids writing skills? Are you more likely to do it in a natural way or do you prefer a curriculum that guides you through the process?  I am better with a curriculum, personally. I like having a bit of structure in our learning, but I call it a flexible structure.  This school year we have had the opportunity to use an elementary writing curriculum for my daughter called WriteShop Primary. Write Shop is a curriculum for grades K-3 that teaches writing in an engaging hands-on way. It uses activities, crafts and stories to teach the writing process.  One of the goals of this writing curriculum is to help make writing fun and enjoyable for kids. I would say that it really does. My daughter is always excited to work on her lessons with me.

Elementary Homeschool Writing Curriculum

WriteShop primary has three levels A, B, & C. We started with level B since my daughter was reading well and already writing a little. These books can be taught to varying levels at once and even give suggestions on making them work.  You can purchase the teacher’s manual, & the activity set (worksheets) as a set or separate. This allows you to use it with multiple kids. The curriculum is VERY affordable. It is just $34 for the set.  We took this curriculum very slow to help her understand all of the concepts fully. The curriculum offers different tracks for how often you want to do it with your child. We started out with doing it twice each week. That was the perfect speed to keep my daughter interested and not overwhelmed.  The beginning of the book gives tips for setting up a writing center for your kids. I already had many of these things set up in our home and readily available.

This is an example of a letter we did together. She told me the ideas and I wrote them for her on the dry erase board. Isn’t that a sweet letter? That was to her cousin.

Each day the lesson includes guided writing practice which is a way to model writing techniques to your child. You brainstorm ideas together of fun things you have done or are going to do. This includes asking questions to encourage them to think of things to write. My daughter LOVED this time we spent. She was always so excited to share fun things to write in our guided writing. When we first started the lessons, I was doing most of the writing, but as the year progressed, she was asking to write it all herself. I would just help with spelling and punctuation as needed.

The Writing Lessons Follow This Pattern:

  • Worksheets: Introduce the lesson theme
  • Prewriting Activities: Prepare for writing with stories and warmups
  • Brainstorming: Generate ideas
  • Writing Project: Create a story
  • Editing and Revising
  • Publish the Project: publish or share with others
  • Evaluate/ Want More?

I have loved working on this fun curriculum with my daughter.  Best of all I have enjoyed watching her enthusiasm and talent  for writing grow!  She has started writing letters to family members regularly since we started this curriculum. She is also improving her spelling and grammar abilities through regular writing. This is a good one to look in to!!
