Fabric Roads for Cars & Trucks

Today is the day for the monthly Poppins Book Nook post. I am excited to share a fun book & activity with all of you today about transportation. At the bottom of the post you can see all of the other bloggers who have shared their ideas on the same topic.

The book we read for this theme was Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld. It is a darling story for all of the car & truck lovers in your life. It tells of all the different construction vehicles and what their jobs are. You say goodnight to each of the trucks as they finish their work for the day.

To go along with this book, we had fun with our building blocks- making towers and then crashing them down!  We used our Little People construction vehicles. We counted to see how many blocks would fit in the back of the dump truck.

I also made some great fabric roads that piece together to make a track for your kids’ cars and trucks. I used scraps of denim that I have saved from cutting off old jeans.

I cut the denim into several different shapes- long road strips, intersections, and corners. Then the kids can pieces the roads together in whatever way they want. I made all of the scraps 6 inches wide so they would all match up.

I zig-zagged around all of the edges with a sewing machine so they would not fray.    If you don’t sew, you could easily do this with some glue or fray-check.   Then I stitched down the center with gold thread for the center line.
