Horrible Histories Books Giveaway!

I am not sure how I have been missing out on these books for so many years, but have you heard of Horrible Histories by Terry Deary?  Apparently everybody has, except me. They have been around for ages (20 years). I want to tell you all about them because they are such a fun homeschool resource for all of us homeschool book lovers. There is a huge series of them. There are also Horrible Geography, Murderous Maths, and Horrible Science books. They have even turned it into a TV series! I was given three books in the series free to share a review here on my site. My son liked them so much that I bought the ENTIRE boxed set to keep his mind entertained this summer. So… I am going to give away the three books I was given for review to one of my readers.

Horrible Histories- History Made Exciting

What are the Horrible Histories books like?  Well, they are pretty horrible- for a squeamish person.  They are full of fascinating (but pretty horrible) facts about the various time periods. They have fun pictures and little comic strips. There are snippets of actual letters written during that time period. There are gross things that the boys love, funny things to keep them reading and exciting stories that make them want more. These books are full of the stuff that is not in your average history book.

Horrible Thing #1 –  There was a story about how during Victorian times they would put their new babies into a bucket of water. If they survived they would keep the baby. Then they would put them outside on their own for a few hours. If they survived that then they knew the babies were strong enough to be kept. CRAZY!

Horrible Thing #2 – A story from the First World War book was about a soldier who was wounded. He was taken to Istanbul where an Armenian doctor was amputating his leg. He sawed through the leg half way then got too tired and just broke it off the rest of the way. GROSS!

There are lots more horrible things to read in these books…
