Have you seen the show How the States Got Their Shapes before? We love watching it at our house! It is a fabulous educational supplement for homeschoolers to learn about the geography of the United States. I was thinking about what a great show it is and decided to enhance the learning experience with a study learning guide to go along with it. The show is currently on Netflix, but the shows they have often change. Also, it is available to purchase on Amazon if you are not a subscriber.
How the States Got Their Shapes is a documentary style show that is entertaining for kids and adults. Each episode focuses on one topic that helped create the shapes of the different states. It begins with water, and covers, transportation, natural forces, politics, religion, economics, and moregv !
There is so much information in each episode that I am created this learning guide one episode at a time. It will take me some time to get through the whole series. Today I have Episode 1, Season 1 ready for you. The episode is titled A River Runs Through It and is all about how water shaped the states. It has 14 questions from different topics discussed in the show. They are all fill-in-the-blank. There is also an answer key at the end.

Teach your kids to DRAW all of the states of the U.S. I loved this post sharing images from co-workers attempting it. This post gives awesome tips for teaching kids to draw the United States. If that seems too overwhelming, start by filling in the states on a blank map as you learn about them in the show!
Have you seen the book Mapping the World with Art? This could be a fun one to pair with this show. It is for the whole world, but you could focus just on the United States section.
Scrambled States of America Game & Book
Smart About the Fifty States is a great informational book about each state.
The Dover United States Coloring Book is great because it has a map & facts for each state for kids to color & learn about. I always like the Dover coloring books.
We also really like the game Great States– There is a Junior version, too!
