See Below to download a PDF of this reading list.

My daughter learned to read this year. I love teaching a child to read and watching as it finally begins to click in their minds. I love seeing the excitement as they take off with reading and you can hardly pull them out of a book.

Early reader books and phonics books such as the Bob Books are so wonderful for helping kids learn to read. However, something I feel is really important for beginning readers is to show them that they can read “real” books, too.

I love using picture books and other stories to help teach my kids to read. This year we have been learning to read with Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel.  Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved children’s book authors.  His books are such great books. Generations of children have loved reading these classic books.

These books are perfect beginner books for early readers. They have simple rhyming words that help kids learn beginning and ending sounds of words. For example One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, or Fox in Socks are great examples of rhyming words that are easy to sound out.

Learning to Read with Dr. Seuss book list

Did you know that many of the Dr. Seuss books have very easy reading levels that young readers can use to practice reading?  I have stacks of Dr. Seuss books because we all love them in our house. Today I’ll share with you a list of Dr. Seuss books by reading level if you read on!

When my kids reach a point where they can read their practice books and are bored with them I pull out the picture books and we read them together. It always seems to excite them about reading and make them hunger for more.

My daughter needed that little push this year to help her. As soon as she realized that she could read 80-90% of the words in some of the Dr. Seuss books, she literally took the whole stack to her room and read for days. I was so proud of her and loved seeing her explore reading with such excitement!

I found a list of Dr. Seuss books on the Scholastic website and searched through a few other sites to compile the following list of Dr. Seuss books by reading level. These are the equivalent reading levels of the Dr. Seuss books.

Knowing this helped me choose the right books for my daughter to begin with on her reading journey. Hop on Pop was the first Dr. Seuss book we started with.  Dr. Seuss books are pretty long for a beginning reader, so we took it a little at a time to start out.

  1. Oh, Wow, all the work done for me. My 2.5 year old is really taking an interest in Dr Seuss so this will be an awesome guide for me to use. There are so many, I just don’t know where to start. Thanks so much for a great post and for joining us on the Kid Lit blog Hop

  2. Dr Seuss book are perfect for beginner readers. we loved so many of these. My daughter’s favorite was Red Fish Blue Fish. She used to read it out aloud almost singing it in a rhythm.. that is how I knew she really liked to read and found reading to be enjoyable. For that I have Dr Seuss to thank 🙂
A great list and useful too. Pinning it for others to visit and share.

  3. Hi Karyn, thanks for posting this list! My seven-year old is needing a little encouragement to want to branch out and read books herself (instead of just being read to), and this list is super helpful in giving me some options for her to read on her own.
    Nice work! 🙂

  4. Thanks for the list! I love the little I’ve read of Dr. Seuss but unfortunately never got to read his books when I was a child. My daughter is learning how to read now and these books are just perfect! So much fun.

Really appreciate this helpful guide for children learning how to read.

  5. Karyn,
Your guidance is amazing and impactful so thank you so much for your help! My 5 year old is an avid reader, starting with Berenstain Bears, Henry & Mudge, Pearl & Wagner, Frog & Toad, and the Fox series. He’s read all of the books in each series a couple of times and he recently has an interest in many of the Dr. Suess books you listed here. Do you have any more book series suggestions? I’m having a difficult time finding new stuff at his reading and interest level so any assistance is very much appreciated. He’s on the 4th Magic Tree House book, “Pirates Past Noon” so glad there are 50+ books in the series to keep his reading abilities growing.
    Kind regards, Jerry
