Look-Alike Animals Mini Unit

We have a fun little paperback book called Look-Alike Animals by Robin Bernard. It has been one of my son’s favorites for a while. It is fun because it compares animals that are often confused with each other and explains the differences between them. I love it because I always mix up certain animals and my son is great at remembering the difference because of this book.

I thought it would be fun to make a kind of game with it to help us learn the difference between look alike animals. I took all of the animals from this book and thought of many more that were not in it, too. I made a fun little printable game to share and to play with my own kids.  The Look-Alike Animals game includes an animal information packet describing the differences between the animals that look alike.  Then there are animal picture cards you can print out to use to play a matching game. When you find the match, you have to correctly identify the animals.

These are the animals I discuss in this animal look-alike unit. (The book doesn’t cover quite this many animals, just FYI)

Alpaca & Llama
Hedgehog & Porcupine
Cheetah, Leopard & Jaguar
Alligator & Crocodile
Hare & Rabbit
Frog & Toad
Seal & Sea Lion
Turtle & Tortoise
Monkey & Ape
Wolf & Coyote
Butterfly & Moth
Dolphin & Porpoise
Donkey & Mule
Crows & Ravens
Hornets, Bees & Wasps
Ostrich & Emu
Cricket & Grasshopper
Gecko & Salamander
Coypu (nutria) & Beaver

I also found this other book online that is similar and looks like a lot of fun, too.  What’s the Difference? 10 Animal Look-Alikes by Judy Diehl and David Plumb.

  1. Wow, I know that not all animals are the same, but this is a great activity to help show how they are the same and different. Thank you for the free printable too, it is a great resource 🙂

  2. Nice unit! It has a lot of good information. Very nice! I know my kids will love it!
Just two things: the labels are wrong on the cheetah / leopard, and there are several spelling typos you might consider fixing…

    1. Ha Ha! I told you they look alike! I am working on correcting it right now and am really embarrassed. I will be updating ASAP. Thanks for pointing it out to me. My son is the actual animal expert in our house and he is making sure I get it right this time.
