Matilda: Book Vs. Movie

Book vs. Movie: Which Will Win?

We have started a new tradition this past school year and it has been really fun!  We read a book, then we find the movie that has been made from the book and watch it.  It is a reward to my kids for reading the book.  Often they are books we read together as a family, but not always.  I decided we need to start doing more formal comparisons, so I created a little worksheet : The Book Vs. The Movie.    We read Matilda by Roald Dahl this month, so we are doing our first comparison on Matilda. This was made into a very fun movie in the 90’s.

Now, I have to begin this by saying that I am rather biased.  When it comes to a book vs. movie battle, I strongly believe that the book is always better!!  If you are of the same opinion, or are biased one way or the other, try to hold that in a little when doing these comparisons. Let your kids discover for themselves and make informed decisions based on what they read and view.

I also want to share a few fun ways to learn with the Matilda book.  It is a cute story that has a lot of educational components hidden in it.

Matilda’s Reading List:

These are the ones mentioned in the book. I have to say, that I have not read all of these yet.  These are challenging books and ones that I would not really recommend to young children!  But you (parents) should read them!!!

Great Expectations, Charles Dickens
Nicholas Nickleby, Charles Dickens
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
Tess of D’Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy

Math with Matilda (& Her Dad):

  • Car #1 was purchased for $78 and sold for $1,425
  • Car #2 was purchased for $118 and sold for $760
  • Car #3 was purchased for $111 and sold for $999.50
  • Car #4 was purchased for $86 and sold for $699.50
  • Car #5 was purchased for $637 and sold for $1649

What was the profit?

  • Matilda was also very good at multiplication. She knew her times tables as high as she could count. The kids in her class were learning the 2 and 3 times tables. Practice the times tables and see how far you can go!

Language Arts with Matilda:

  • Matilda wrote a limerick about her teacher Miss Honey.  Teach your kids about what a limerick is and see if they can write one!
  • Miss Trunchbull wanted the kids to spell words forwards as well as backwards. Do you know how to spell common words backwards?
  • Miss Honey tight the kids a mnemonic to help them remember how to spell difficulty. Can you make up any other ones to help you spell harder words?

What is your favorite book/movie combo?  Do you think books always win, too?

  1. This has been saved away for awhile, but we’ve been doing a book and a movie pairing for a while and my kids love it. I’m trying to decide if we’ll do Matilda next or not or another random Roal Dahl book, he’s got a lot of them made into movies.
