Real Life Learning in Homeschool

So much of homeschooling is real life learning. I want to show you some of the real life learning in our homeschool.

What I love about homeschooling is the ability to be flexible with learning. I learned early on that learning is more than sitting at a desk with a workbook and a pencil. I have always wanted learning to happen in various ways in our home.

I like learning to be fun, interesting, and interactive. I want my kids to crave more, desire to search out answers and ideas.  Because of that, things are not always the traditional school-like atmosphere in our home. But, I love that!

Let your kids learn with all of their senses. It is more enjoyable and also more memorable. Following, are lots of pictures and ideas of how to make learning more memorable and real.  I don’t think anyone could ever look at this and think homeschooled kids don’t have it great, am I right?!

Real Life Learning in Homeschool

Explore learning through nature.
There is so much to learn from seasons, plants, insects, rocks, water, and animals.
Grow a garden together, raise animals, hike, go to petting zoos, pick fruit, catch bugs, study the stars.
Adventures in nature can be fun and educational all at once!
You don’t even have to go far to have nature adventures. Your own backyard or a walk down the street will open up lots of things to investigate!
Study the seasons together. Look closer at snow, rain, falling leaves and newly sprouting plants. Learn how the stars change with the seasons.
Through nature you can learn about so many science principles!

Learn Through Projects and Experiments

Hands on learning is the best kind of learning and we do a LOT of it around here!
Explore with clay, paint, magnets, fire (with supervision), bubbles, chemical reactions, sewing, cooking. (Teaching Kids to Cook).
When you get your senses involved learning will stick!  Try this Self Inflating Balloon Experiment!
Create displays out of things they are passionate about. Present it to family!
Make and try new things. See my post about Teaching Young Kids to Sew.
Bring current events into your learning. This is an important part of real life learning because they are learning about the world around them!  (Election Learning)
Learn about how your body works. There are so many projects and ideas to make this exciting!

Play a Lot of Learning Games

Real life learning in our house looks like lots of board games and other educational games. You can turn any kind of learning into something fun by adding a game aspect to it. Check out some of the fun learning games on my website.

Go on Lots of Field Trips

There are so many amazing field trip options around the community.
Visit museums, aquariums, fire stations, bakeries, zoos, aviaries, botanical gardens, etc.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to go on field trips. Search for free local events in your area. There are often discounts available for homeschoolers and educators, too.

You can set up field trips with fires stations, police stations, grocery stores, and other places in the community.  Learn about Community Helpers after visiting their work places.

The learning possibilities really are endless!
