If you missed it yesterday, we launched our latest STEAM Kids book, this one is all about Christmas.  If you are on the fence about whether or not you would like to buy the STEAM Kids Christmas book, I have a little project preview for you today. One of my projects in the book is a Soft Circuit Christmas ornament. Today, I will show you how to make it!

Soft Circuit Christmas Ornament

This is a project older kids could do on their own with guidance. It’s a fun project because it is also adding in an element of STEAM!  They are learning science, electricity and design!

How to Make a Soft Circuit Christmas Ornament:

Supplies:

Felt
Conductive Thread & regular thread
LED Pin Lights
Needle
Sewable Battery Holder
CR2032 Coin Cell Battery
Beads and Sequins for Decorating

Steps:

  1. Cut out the design you want to make out of felt. Sew or use glue to attach the star and tree trunk and hanging string.
  2. The LED pin lights have a positive side and a negative side. The longer side is the positive side. Roll up the two ends of the pins with pliers. The negative (shorter) end, curl up smaller and tighter. Curl the positive (longer) into a larger curl to distinguish them.
  3. Sew from one side of the LED to the matching (positive or negative) side of the battery holder. Once you have sewn a line from the light to the battery holder, secure with a knot and cut the thread. Then start a new stitch to attach the other side.sewn-circuit-ornament
  4. Put the battery in and your light will light up!
  5. Decorate your tree as desired
