Today I have a whole bunch of awesome shark activities for kids to share with you. Â These will be so much fun to add to any shark-themed or ocean-themed lessons. They would also be fun for shark week!
I got to participate in an awesome book exchange this summer. Â I can’t wait to tell you all about it!! Â My kids and I really had a blast with this.
The Summer Book Exchange was organized by the great bloggers of Â
The Educator’s Spin On It. There were 36 bloggers who participated this year. We each filled out some information about ourselves & were matched up with another blogger who has kids similar ages. Then we sent them a book with several activities that correspond with that book.
I was paired with Amanda who actually blogs at the Educator’s Spin on It! Â I worked hard on a package for her & her three children and she did the same for us. What a fun thing to do as a mom, right? Â Our kids had a blast!
It was hard to send our little package off- the kids wanted to keep it all. So, when ours came in the mail from Amanda, we were beyond excited!!
Here is what we saw when we opened it up:
She sent us so many fun shark activities! Â First of all, instead of just one book, there were three! Â We liked that a lot since we are pretty obsessed with books at our house.
She sent us
The Great Shark Escape, Magic School Bus book (One of my son’s FAVORITE series of books!) As well as two other shark science books that were easier for my 2 younger ones to read.
Shark Activities for Kids
Shark Science Activity:Â
Along with the books, there were several fun activities to learn about & enjoy sharks and the ocean. I grew up in Florida so I love this topic & often wish my kids could learn more about it.
I think the kids all-time favorite shark activity was the sifting for shark teeth activity. Â She sent us a bag of sand from her creek that always has lots of shark teeth & fossils, also a sifter. You can
buy shark teeth online in bulk & recreate this activity!
The kids did this first thing & have been treasuring their little shark teeth discoveries! Â This was so cool for them to be able to do. Â Especially since we live nowhere near an ocean!!
Shark Play Activity: Finger Puppets
She also sent us some darling
felt shark puppets. Â These were handmade & decorated to look like a variety of different little sharks. I got a picture while they were still in the bag & they have been carried off & well loved by my littlest. So, I can’t find them to take a better picture now. They are so fun, though!
We were able to identify the different types of sharks she made after reading our books. The shark puppet set was perfect for little hands, my toddlers and preschoolers loved them!
Easy Shark Craft Tutorial:
Need a shark week craft that’s super easy? This crayon resist whale shark art project is fun and super simple! Â This helped my kids get their creativity flowing. Â This craft is great for preschool, kindergarten or any age that loves to paint and color!
My daughter especially loves to paint, so this was a perfect activity for her! Â She sent us an templates of a shark for the kids to draw dots on with white crayon and paint the shark.
On a blank white paper toy kids painted it to look like the ocean. They drew waves with a white crayon and painted it with various shades of blue.
Once both were dry, cut out the shark and glue it to the painted paper with a glue stick or school glue. This will make it look like the shark is swimming in the ocean. It was a very fun art activity! (She even sent us paint, crayons & a paint brush!)
I thought it was so sweet of them to send a little Lego building kit for my son. It is one of his favorite things to do. I mentioned that in an e-mail to her & loved that she took that into consideration. She found a kit at a consignment shop to build a boat.
Check out this awesome
Lego Sharks Set! It would also go well with these activities.
Another Fun Shark Activity for Kids:
Grab these cool
educational shark toys and put them into bins of water for the kids to play with. Â They can learn about the different types of sharks in the process! You could also use them to make a shark sensory bottle.
Also included in the shark-themed package were 2 different mini-books for the kids to write things they learned/wanted to learn about sharks, and one to color with different kinds of sharks.
We had such a fun time being a part of this! Â We absolutely loved out shark activities. I can’t wait to see Amanda’s post about our box of goodies.
A little hint… Â They are going on a safari!!! Â See her post about our package
here.
Looks like a lot of fun! We are having a good time with our box as well. 🙂
How darling! I love the idea of swapping book boxes, and it definitely looks like they put a lot of thought into it!
I am glad your kids enjoyed the activities! And, so glad you found a body for the LEGO guy! The things you worry about as a parent =)
