Teach Your Child to Play Piano

We are a musical family and I have always wanted my kids to learn to play piano. Piano playing, in my opinion, is such a valuable life skill.  There have been many scientific studies done that show reading music improves the brain in various ways, too.  One problem for me is finding the money for all of the lessons I would like to enroll my kids in!  I want them all in piano, but it can add up to quite a large expense. I decided to start them at home on my own to teach them the basics of piano. Even if you are not terribly musical, you can teach your child to play piano at home!

Teach Your Child to Play Piano

Alfred Music is the world’s largest educational music publisher and has a really great kit for teaching piano to beginners called Teach Your Child to Play Piano. (I received this kit for free in exchange for an honest review).  I was really excited to stumble across this site and studied it out for a while. Their products are really amazing.  They have music education books for all different instruments including voice. I have been using the beginning piano kit with my two kids for about 2 months now and have been really pleased with all they have learned in this time. My kids have not had a lot of piano experience yet. We have just done a few different things from home at this point. My kids really love music and are excelling at piano from these simple at home teaching materials.

The Teach Your Child to Play Piano kit comes with the following:

Teach Your Child to Play Piano, book 1 (Which also includes a CD of the songs they will learn).

This book has parent instruction guides as well as student-friendly pages to help them learn on their own. The book teaches kids all about hand position, the black and white keys, note names and values, and begins with some simple songs to play. It has a guide for parents to help them keep a practice schedule and tips for teaching the new concepts to the kids with each lesson. The book is a lot of fun for little learners. It has activities for them to draw and write in their book.

The accompanying CD is useful if parents are not able to play. This way kids and parents can hear what the song should sound like while they are learning it. So, if you have no experience with piano, you can use this to help you teach!  There is a certificate of achievement at the back that you can give them when they complete the entire book!

Famous & Fun Deluxe Collection Book 1- Early Elementary

This book is full of fun songs that your kids will love to play (Scooby Doo, Row Your Boat, Over the Rainbow, etc.) My older son, who has a little emote music knowledge enjoyed playing from this book. He loved playing the Scooby Doo song the most, I think. (At least from what I hear!)

music flashcards

Color-Coded Flash Cards

The flashcards contain notes, musical symbols, theory terms, and more. They are color coded by category and numbered on the back. I love using these with my kids to help them practice all the different aspects of theory they need to learn while learning piano.

Music Games CD-Rom

This is a fun software program to help kids practice music theory in a game format. It is compatible with both Windows & Mac. There is no instruction given on this game, so it is better for kids who have a little more musical knowledge. My son loved it & liked the challenge of figuring them out.

Keyboard Chart

Double Sided Fold-out Keyboard Chart

This keyboard chart is a fun addition to use when you teach your child piano. One side has the note names on it and the other side is blank.  It is great to use for practicing notes while not on the piano or for lining it up with the keys on the piano to help kids learn their notes.

We have been enjoying the Teach Your Child to Play Piano set a lot in our home.  It is a fun and easy way to start your kids on piano at home. If you are looking for something for your beginners to use at home, this is a fun way to go. Plus, buying all of these as a set saves a great deal of money over purchasing them all separately. It saves you even more money than if you started them in lessons!!
