Write From History Copywork Books ~ A Review

This post may contain affiliate links.

We have been working hard on improving handwriting in my oldest son. Anytime I have the opportunity to try out a new resource for him, I am thrilled to try it out. I was contacted by Kimberly Garcia, the author of Write From History to see if I wanted to review her history and copywork books. I was very impressed with what I saw on her site, so I was happy to say yes! I was even more impressed when we got the book in the mail.

Write from History review

Write From History is more than just copy work, however. It is based on the Charlotte Mason homeschool style of narrations and could be used as a gentle writing program for grades 1-5. The books have historical reading passages that the students read from living books including short stories, primary source documents, poetry, and cultural tales from various time periods. They then have a space to write a summary of what was read followed by 2 different copy work passages to practice handwriting, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

I chose to review Ancient History volume 1.  Volume 1 is recommended for grades 1-3. This volume covers ancient history (Creation through 400 AD) with historical narratives by James Baldwin from Fifty Famous Stories, Aesop’s Fables, Biblical stories, poetry from or about ancient times, and fun cultural tales.  It is divided into four different chapters. Chapter 1 has short stories about people, places, and events from the time period.  Chapter 2 has excerpts from primary source documents such as essays, letters, and government documents. Chapter 3 is poetry from and about the time period.  Chapter 4 has cultural myths and tales from various countries.

She has a suggested schedule in the beginning of the book to help you in teaching your students.

Day 1:  Reading, Oral Narrations, and Written Summations
Day 2: Copywork and Grammar
Day 3: Copywork (or dictation) and Grammar
Day4: Reading, Oral narrations, Copywork, and Grammar
Day 5: Copywork (or dictation) and Grammar

The book is paperback, 309 pages and sells for $27.86 on Amazon.

There are several different versions in four different time periods that you can purchase.  All have 2 different levels and are offered in cursive or manuscript. Level one is recommended for grades 1-3 and level 2 is recommended for grades 3-5

My Thoughts:

Write from History curriculum

The Write From History books are perfect to go with any history curriculum you may be using in your homeschool.  We have been using Story of the World and I think they perfectly complement that curriculum. I am sure that  they would work very well with any others, too! I love the historical passages she uses. I am really happy to have had the opportunity to use this in our homeschool. This is something I will be using for years to come.  I have been doing another type of copy work with my son and this has replaced it. I love the simplicity of it and how it merges so well with what we are already using. I highly recommend them!!
