I am a big supporter of learning all about different cultures and customs. I have traveled a lot and have loved my experiences with different cultures, religions, and ethnicities. While I have not been able to take my kids to other countries yet, we love to study about them and learn as much as we can through our community! Â January 27th is Multicultural Children’s Book Day. And I am excited to be able to take part in it by sharing a review of a multicultural book called Zapato Power: Freddie Ramos Makes a Splash by Jacqueline Jules and art by Miguel Benitez.
First a little about Multicultural Children’s Book Day. It is a great program that is trying to raise awareness of diversity in literature. It puts books from all different cultures into kids lives so they can learn more about people from all cultures. It is hosted by some awesome bloggers that I will tell you about at the end of the post. These bloggers have found over 300 reviewers to share and review different multicultural children’s books. Also, learn about the Classroom Reading Challenge at the end of the post!
Zapato Power is a series of children’s books about Freddie. I received the 3rd book in the series, but it is great on its own as well. Â Freddie is a little boy who has shoes that make him a superhero. He says the special words : Zoom! Zoom! Zapata! and he can run super fast!
Freddie wants to help people with his special powers, so he races around fixing problems. He helps get a lost wallet back to his friend, he also helps stop a mean girl from littering chewed gum all around town. It is full of fun comic book-like illustrations.
Zapato Power is an adorable book and my kids all enjoyed the story! It is an early chapter book for younger readers. I would recommend it for 6-8 year-olds.
