Acorn Color Matching

Acorns are such a fun thing to collect and play with. There are so many creative things you can do with acorns. They can be math manipulatives, craft projects, and other learning tools. Today I am sharing with you a simple acorn color matching activity. I made this for my preschooler and she loves it!

Rainbow Acorn Color Matching- Fall Nature

This post is part of the Weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids. This week’s book is: Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt. If you have not yet read this book, it is a fun one!  We laughed hard at this book!

How to Make the Acorn Color Matching Activity:

Collect some acorns.

We got ours at a nearby park. We were there to do our water testing experiment from a few weeks ago and the kids came across a large pile of acorns from the oak trees in the park. They saw a squirrel run past and were pretty sure they found the squirrel’s collection. Don’t worry, we did not take all of the squirrel’s collection! There were plenty more. We did not want the squirrel to lose all of his winter food.

Make sure each acorn has it’s cap on it when you collect it.

Separate the acorns and their caps.

Paint the acorns a variety of colors. We used acrylic paint to paint our acorns but to make it more durable, you may want to add a coat of mod lodge or a gloss paint. I painted each with 2 coats of paint to make it darker. We painted two acorn of each color.

Once the paint is all dry, mix them up, and let your little one find the matches. With there being two acorns each color, some colors will not fit, so this adds an extra challenge.
