My daughter really loves the American Girl books. She just recently got into them and we have been having fun reading the books and learning about the different time periods in history together. We started with the Kaya series. For her birthday this year, all she wanted was a Kaya doll. Then we discovered the mini dolls and got her 5 of them instead of one big doll! 🙂 She was thrilled with them!
I was lucky to be able to review a Girls of American History Unit study this past month with my daughter. When I got this opportunity, my daughter was so excited and was literally begging to start it! It came to us at the perfect time. We chose to do the unit on Kaya since that is where we started with our reading together. If you have not yet heard of the Girls from American History site, you should definitely take some time to look into it. They created a series of multi sensory unit studies to use with all of the different books in the American Girl book series (12 total). The units are designed to last about six weeks, but you could really extend them to any length that fits the needs of your family. They are recommended for 2nd-6th graders. I used it with my 7-year-old daughter and it was perfect for her age. I do think you could easily make the activities more challenging for older kids. I think that boys would even like lots of the activities. It is not just for girls!
The American Girl book units include a weekly schedule, required and additional suggested readings, links and ideas for related crafts, field trips ideas, meals related to the time period, and more fun ideas. It gives ideas to make the unit more inclusive with writing, geography, history, art, character study and more. If you are studying American History in your homeschool this would be such a fun addition to your curriculum. The work is already done for you and you can just pull it out and have fun!
A Sampling of the Ideas:
We tried out some crafts and some of the book resources. We had so much fun with basket weaving. We made a basket from the bottom half of a milk jug. I cut one inch strips down it and tied the yarn to one of the pieces to start it out. Then just weave in and out around it.
She also loved decorating a teepee and playing with it.
These are just a couple of the many fun ideas included in this unit.
The units sell for $7.95 each on their website.
You can also choose to buy all at once in a bundle for just $72.
What is included in the American Girl units?
With each unit, you get a PDF download with the lesson plans and book resources. You also get access to the resources for the unit on the website. This is a round-up of crafts, books, field trips, and other related resources that they have put together for your use.
If you have young kids interested in these books you should definitely look into the units from Girls of American History. You will love what they have put together!
