We have been studying the Apologia Science books and are currently using Exploring Creation with Zoology 3: Land Animals of the Sixth Day (Young Explorer Series). The last chapter we read was Rodents & the Rest. We learned all about rodents and animals similarly classified. We are really loving this book! I’ve learned TONS from it. My son is completely obsessed with animals, so this is right up his alley.
To go along with it we wanted to dissect owl pellets. I’ve heard that this is a fun project to do. Do you know what owl pellets are? It is kinda gross, really. They upchuck the bones & fur of the animals that they eat. Well, my husband came home with a box of Unreal Upchuck. He was worried that I wouldn’t want it because it wasn’t the real thing. I was SO glad, though. I would much rather dissect something that looks like the real thing, but is very clean. 🙂 Just me. The bones were plastic & the “fur” was synthetic & hypo-allergenic.
The kit came with a mouse pellet and a starling pellet. It had a paper with the bones and how to assemble the skeleton. It was so fun to try and assemble the animals. It was harder than I expected it to be.
We learned a lot about bones and skeletons. I’m so glad we did it & highly recommend it.
