I have a really neat book to share with you today. Are any of you fans of Pippi Longstocking? I have always loved her silly, fun stories and have enjoyed reading them to my kids. I am pretty sure I was her for halloween a time or two… Well, the author of Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren, has another fabulous book that I only just had the pleasure of discovering called Rasmus and the Vagabond. It turns out this author has a LOT of amazing books that I now need to start collecting. Man, how did I miss them all these years? (I was lucky to receive this book for free from Propellor Consulting in exchange for an honest review.)
I have been reading Rasmus and the Vagabond aloud to my kids the past little while and it has been a delight to read together. Rasmus is a darling character and one that you immediately fall in love with. He is an orphan and gets in trouble one day. Instead of facing the punishments of the mean headmistress (the children call her The Hawk), he decides to run away from the orphanage. Rasmus meets a vagabond or a tramp named Oscar. He and Oscar have some wonderful and exciting adventures together. They end up happening upon a crime being committed and have to solve a mystery.
This book was first copyrighted in 1956, so it is a great old classic. There are wonderful moral messages in it and great vocabulary to teach your kids. The orphanage story is so classic, too. We have seriously loved it and will definitely be finding more Astrid Lindgren books to read together as a family.
Astrid Lindgren was a swedish author. Many of her books were based on her own childhood. Many of her books have now been made into movies, too. She has excited readers for generations and has won multiple literary prizes.
