Autumn Science: Comparing Squash with Mrs. McNosh

I have a fun little autumn science activity to try- comparing squash. This is a sensory science activity that kids will love!

With the coming of fall comes all of the yummy pumpkin and squash ideas to try.  I was trying to think of a fun fall related book idea for this month and remembered the book Mrs. McNosh and the Great Big Squash that we have had on our shelf for years. I also have several varieties of squash on my counter just waiting to be eaten.

What could be more fun than cutting into them and checking out the differences between the different varieties of squash? So we are comparing squash with Mrs. McNosh (catchy, right?).

Autumn Book and Idea- Comparing Squash

Mrs. McNosh and the Great Big Squash is a cute Autumn story of a lady who plants a squash that gets to big she ends up living in it. It is a cute story & my kids think it is so silly!

Autumn Science: Comparing Squash

I had three types of squash to use for our comparing squash activity- butternut, spaghetti and acorn squash. I let the kids hold and examine each one and see how different they look on the outside. Then I cut them each open.  They smelled and touched the inside of each one to see how they compared.

The kids wanted to scoop out all of the guts of the squash and feel the sliminess of them. I thought it would be a great sensory activity for them!

They also looked at and compared the seeds of each one. They looked quite similar! We washed and roasted the seeds. I have only ever had roasted pumpkin seeds, but these were just as delicious!  We just mixed them all together. Yum!

Next I roasted the squash so they could try each one and see how they compare in taste. I am planning on making some butternut & acorn squash soup today to use up all of the leftovers. I love using the spaghetti squash just like spaghetti.

This comparing squash activity was a LOT of fun- it was science, sensory and story time all in one! My kids enjoyed it as much as I did!
