Color Mixing With Light

Color mixing with light is a fun activity for kids to learn about what happens when you mix different colors. The thing is, light does not always react the same way as mixing colored paints. So we tried a little experiment to see what happens!

I used four small flashlights that I found for a dollar each at a local store. Then I covered each flashlight with a different color of cellophane sheets cut in half. We used red, yellow, green and blue. Wrap it with tape or rubber bands to secure it on.

Once the  flashlights were ready to go, we went to a dark room to try out our color mixing with light experiment!  I used a white poster board to shine the lights on, but a white wall will work just the same.

I have a printable Color Mixing with Light worksheet you can use to help you track the colors you make as you mix the lights. It has a coloring page to fill in the colors you see as well as some questions to full in about the results.  It is on my subscriber freebie page.

It was so interesting to see the color combinations we could make with the colored flashlights! My kids were surprised to see that they could make white light when they mixed red green and blue! These three colors are called the primary colors of light.

  1. I am LOVING these ideas. I used to be a classroom teacher for five years, but changed directions and currently work as an After School Teacher. I get to teach the STEM activities to grades 2-5. And started a ‘Glow’ unit recently. We are doing blacklight/glow in dark related activities but I’m going to transition it to colored light next and wow, love this! So simple yet so awesome to dive into colored light and all sorts of directions we can head in a hands on, fun way. Thanks for always posting such amazing stuff!
