Dandelion Life Cycle Learning

This is the perfect time of year for a wildflower nature study. Â We are learning about the dandelion life cycle this week. Â Each Spring we are inundated with dandelions. Since they are a weed that I want to get out of my yard, I usually find them to be a nuisance. However, they are such a fascinating and pretty weed. I decided it was time we learn a little more about them. Â So, today I want to share with you some Dandelion Life Cycle learning activities that we have done together this week.
I am so very excited to be joining a new monthly series with some fellow bloggers ~ The Nature Book Club. Each month there is a nature theme and this month is wildflowers. I will choose a related book that we have enjoyed and give you some ideas to tie it in to your teaching. I love this because we are nature lovers, but don’t do enough with it. Â This will encourage me to do more nature learning with my kids, and hopefully will help you do the same! Â (See all of my Book Activities for Kids)
Dandelion Life Cycle Printable
I made a set of Dandelion Life Cycle learning printables for kids. It includes a life cycle, a life cycle spinner, a sketching page for drawing the dandelions you observe, and a cut and paste page to put the dandelion flowers in order of growth.
We watch the dandelions grow each Spring in our yard and usually do all we can to rid ourselves of them. One spring, instead of treating my lawn, I made some dandelion jelly. Have you ever tried that?  It’s quite yummy! That’s the year we discovered my daughter was allergic to dandelions and decided that instead of picking them and bringing them into the house, we should instead probably avoid them! But every year, they come again. 🙂
Despite her allergies, my daughter still enjoyed learning and reading about the dandelion life cycle!
Â
This Spring, I found some adorable books about dandelions at the library. These are what inspired my post today!
Dandelions: Stars in the Grass by Mia Posada is an informational book about how dandelions grow. It is written to young children and is a nice pleasant read! My young kids learned a lot from it.
The Dandelion Seed by Joseph Anthony  -This cute story follows the life of a dandelion seed as it travels around various places and through the seasons and finally settles to grow.
I discovered there is another book in the series as well: The Dandelion Seed’s Big Adventure. Â We are looking forward to reading this one soon.

I was super excited to see that you picked DANDELIONS! My youngest loves them and is constantly blowing “dandelion wishes” after watching an episode of Little Bear.
Very cool! Those books look adorable. My kids love dandelions!
Love this book (It’s one of our favorites!), but I especially love all that you’ve shared here to help us learn even more about dandelions! 🙂
