Drummer Boy Christmas Drum Craft

We have a favorite book that we like to read at Christmas time called The Drummer Boy by Loren Long. It is a sweet story and beautifully illustrated. This year, I thought it would be fun to make a Christmas drum craft to go along with the book.
The Drummer Boy is a story about a boy who gets a drummer boy toy. It gets lost by accident and goes on all of these adventures trying to find its way home. Â It is always playing its drum with a fun rhythm. When the boy finds the toy finally, he decides to place it in the manger scene so the drummer could play for the baby Jesus.
I think I love this story so much because I love the The Little Drummer Boy song. It has always been one of my favorites and this book reminds me of it.
Now, back to the little drum craft that we made. This is the easiest thing. Â I basically gave it all over to my 5-year-old and he made it. Â I helped out with the taping, but everything else was done by him! Crafts that kids can do almost entirely on their own are my favorite.
How to Make the Christmas Drum Craft:
To make this Drummer boy drum craft, we used a #10 can, but any large can will work!
Then we trimmed some colored construction paper to fit around the can. I used 2 pieces of green paper to cover it. We glued it on. We used red and yellow to make the zig-zag pattern and glued them on top as well.
To make the strap for the drum, I folded a piece of red duct tape in half and taped it onto the can.
For the drumsticks I made them using wooden skewers and duct tape for the balls on the ends. Just tape a few pieces around it until it is ball shaped.
Replace the lid on top of the can and drum away!

What a clever recycling idea – and wonderful instrument! I think I am going to have to try this!!
I LOVE this idea. A great way to use something from the junk modeling box and so much fun to have to play with too
Oh he looks so happy with his drum. My 18 month old loves to hit things and make noises so think he would definitely enjoy this 🙂
How fun! I just put a coffee can into the trash that I was thinking I needed to come up with a use for, so I’ll be digging it back out (luckily, it’s sitting in there alone after replacing the bag) in a minute for this!
That’s so cute! My kids would love a drum craft! I’m also participating in the Emma Owl Christmas Book Blog Hop later on this week 🙂
I love kid-made instruments. This drum would be easy to make and easy to play!
