Physical activity is very important to me and to my family.  I have always tried really hard to stay active because I believe it necessary for my physical, mental and emotional well-being.  That being said… I have been looking for ways to keep my kids active.  Family Time Fitness is something I have been looking into purchasing for about a year now, so when it became available for review through the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I was very excited!  There really are not a lot of P.E. options for homeschoolers, so Family Time Fitness is brilliant for putting something like this together.

Family Time Fitness is a physical education program that was designed with homeschoolers in mind, but can also be used in a co-op or school setting.  It can be done outside or inside if necessary in bad weather.  They recommend doing it a minimum of 3 times a week, but five days a week is encouraged.  The lessons are designed for grades K-8, but really can be catered to all levels. It is arranged to be done with the whole family together.  We just added it into our morning routine each day.  My kids are quite young, so our lessons ended up being a little shorter than 30 minutes.  It really wore them out (me, too)!  That’s a good thing, right?!

What you get with the program:
  • A start-up guide, 260 easy and fun 30-45 minute lessons in PDF format
  • Video demonstrations
  • Assessment tools to track progress
  • Weekly reminder and encouragement e-mails
  • Lifetime updates
  • Online video webinars
  • Certificates of completion
  • A healthy body! 🙂

Here is an informational video with a little sample of some of the activities included:

Lesson format:
Each lesson lists the skills taught (mobility, balance, coordination, flexibility, strength, etc…), equipment needed, &  recovery time between activities.  Then they start with a warm up that has a few activities to get you moving & warm up your bodies.  Then there is an Activity/ Game Play time with fun active game like things such as: Cross the River, Hula Hoop Walks, Musical Statues, Freeze Tag, etc.  After the activity there is a cool down with various stretches & yoga poses.  At the end of each lesson there is an outdoor activity to use to extend the lesson.  There are links to watch demonstration videos of all of the different activities so you know how to do them.

Our Thoughts: We have been having so much fun using Family Time Fitness! I definitly give this program a BIG thumbs up!!  My kids love the fun games and activities in the lessons.  They love doing the different stretches and also having a chance to get up and run around. It was nice to have a formal PE curriculum to use bexcause it just wasn’t happening before.  I really enjoyed doing it with my kids.  There were many times in the lessons that we were just laughing and having a great time together.  I love these kinds of moments with my family.  It is a great way to strenghten their muscles, and to teach them valuable motor skills that they may not have gotten otherwise.  I really liked the demo movies- it helped a lot!

We downloaded all of the lessons onto our iPad Kindle & brought it outside with us to use for the lessons.  It made it really easy to access & I didn’t feel the need to print any of the lessons out. There is no planning or preparation, you just read through it & see what to do for the day.  It is simple to use. There are a few supplies needed- cones, hula hoops, jump ropes- but those are easy to find & typically most people have them on hand already.

Family Time Fitness won 1st place this year for Physical Fitness from the Practical Homeschooling Reader Award.  That says a lot!

Pricing:  You could pay a lot to go to a gym each mont, but Family Time Fitness is MUCH cheaper than a gym membership. Right now they are selling level 1 for just $57.  That is a really good deal for all that you get, especially considering that you don’t have to buy it again- once you download it, it’s yours for life to use over & over again with all of your kids. Plus they will e-mail you any updates for forever. After using this, I definitely think it is worth the price!

You can also upgrade your membership to the Platinum Package which includes level 1, level 2, a Basketball module, workbooks for K-5th grade, and a 1 year subscription to Home Educatiing Family Magazine.  This package is $137.

They also have a High School program available for just $27, a basketball program, K-5 Activity Workbooks, Online High School Health classes, lincesing to use in schools, and more…
