Famous Landmarks I Spy With Google Earth

This month’s book club theme is “Where in the World?” I loved this topic because it could really go in so many different directions. My kids and I have been having so much fun with our topic, I decided to do a Famous Landmarks I Spy with Google Earth.
My ideas was sparked by a book I have called The Kids Fun Filled Search and Find Geography Book by Anthony Tallarico. (We found this used and it is apparently out of print because you can only buy used ones on Amazon.) My kids love search and find books and this one is great because it is also teaching them all about the world as they look for different things on the page. These kinds of books are great to keep kids occupied on a boring errand!
The book has sections from all parts of the world full of maps, fun facts and pictures to search for. It is sure to entertain your kids! 🙂 Mine have been enjoying it.
So, after playing around with this book, I thought it would be great to show my kids some of the famous landmarks around the world and help them become familiar with them. There is a Google Earth App of you can use it right from your computer. It is so amazing to explore it and to see all of the incredible sights from around the world up close on your screen. My kids and I couldn’t stop- we just kept thinking of more and more cool things to look at. The fun thing is that you can do 3-D tours of the outside of the building. You can also go to street view and see them from a standing viewpoint. Some of them even have real live shots of the buildings.
To expand on this even more, I created a 30 Famous Landmarks I Spy with Google Earth printable activity sheet. It has the name of the landmark, and when you type it in, it takes you to that place in the world and the kids can write in where in the world that landmark is. It is a fun way to get them to see the world!

Sounds like a really neat book! Too bad it is out of print! We explored Landmarks, too, for the Poppins Book Nook. Such a fun theme!
This book sounds amazing! The front cover made me giggle with the question about earthquakes- here in Christchurch, New Zealand we have had 29038 quakes since our big jolt in September 2011- including one yesterday! But I don’t think New Zealand would be the answer as this all happened quite recently.
Wow, this is really cool idea. We also did landmarks (but with a different book), and now I am going to first try Google Earth myself and then show it to my daughter!
What a fun book! And brilliant idea to use Google Earth! Technology is amazing!
Great idea using Google Earth, smart! Thank you for linking up to the Thoughtful Spot Weekly Bloghop!
What a great idea! And thank you for sharing the printable.
What a brilliant idea. Thanks for the printable. A fellow Book Nook blogger!
This would be fun for the whole family. I just got my kids the Toobs of the famous landmarks, maybe we can use google earth to look at them in comparison to the replicas. (Thanks for the idea!!)
Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
This is an awesome idea! I will have to show the girls Google Earth when studying geography!
Fun idea! Thanks for the free printable. It means I might actually do this 🙂
