Remember the movie Groundhog Day? It is such a silly movie, but I think about that every time this little “holiday” rolls around. That has nothing to do with anything, but I can’t write a post without mentioning it I guess! Why do we continue to celebrate this day? It’s a funny tradition, isn’t it? Well, have fun with it and teach your students about the history and all about groundhogs with this printable Groundhog Day Unit Study.
Groundhog Day is February 2nd. If you live outside the United States, you might know nothing about this day. Well here is a basic summary:
It started back in the 1800’s and some traditions are just hard to give up. There is a famous groundhog (also called a woodchuck) named Punxsutawney Phil that lives in Pennsylvania. Each year, the groundhog comes out of its hole/burrow. If it is cloudy when the groundhog comes out, it will not see its shadow and Spring will arrive early, (before the vernal equinox). If it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow and go back into its den. This means that Winter weather will persist for six more weeks.
It’s a fun tradition and my kids and I love watching the groundhog each year!
Now back to the Groundhog Day Unit. . .
This printable Groundhog Day Unit is 4 pages long and teaches about the history of Groundhog Day, and all about groundhogs. Kids will love the colorful pages. There are fill-in the blank pages and others that will require a little research on their part. It is upper elementary level.
