A Whale of a Time Counting by 2s
Hi! I’m J from Relentlessly Fun, Deceptively Educational – a geek turned Mom who loves to trick her son into l
earning with creative and fun activities. I’m thrilled to be guest blogging on Karyn’s site and hope you’ll enjoy this skip counting lesson that teaches about math AND one of nature’s most amazing mammals.
My son has a natural curiosity about whales. I can’t say that I blame him. They are truly awesome. To increase his understanding of these giant mammals, I combed the local library’s non-fiction stacks and found two cool books: “I Am a Whale” by Darlene R. Stille and “Whales” by Carol K. Lindeen. The former I read to him; the latter he read to me.
Once we’d learned that whales sing, can be as big as an airplane, and have flippers to help them steer through the water, I gave my son a skip counting worksheet and had him circle every second number. (Download it here.)
He had a whale of a good time learning how to skip count by 2s!
