Have you ever done ice painting?  This was a perfect activity for a hot sunny summer day.  The kids really enjoyed watching the ice melt and swirling them around as they did.

Ice Painting With Kids

This can be both fun and educational combining both science and art!  Teach kids about the water cycle, about hot and cold and melting and freezing as you do this fun ice painting activity.

How to Do Ice Painting With Kids

This is a really simple activity to put together!  You will likely have all of the supplies on hand already.

Here’s what you need:

Ice cube trays
Food coloring
Popsicle sticks (cut in half)

Fill the trays with water & put a few drops of food coloring in each one.  You can mix colors or do different strengths of colors for variety.  Put a stick into each & freeze overnight.

Get out lots of paper.  I used my newsprint roll of paper (from a newspaper office, I bought the roll end for only $3- it has lasted me for YEARS!)

Then the kids can just pull out the ice cubes and paint away!
It is a great sensory activity and they really loved it!
Make it part of a science lesson:
This could also easily be used in a lesson on states of matter– water freezing and melting.
Somebody wondered if they taste good?  Nope, not really. 🙂
Overall, this was a great success.  They had so much fun ice painting on this hot Summer day.
