Island Sensory Play

Today is the monthly Poppins Book Nook post. The theme this month is Caldecott Medal Books. I LOVE this topic because these are some of the best books around. 🙂 I am excited to read through what the other bloggers have shared. Be sure to check them out at the bottom of the post. The book I chose for my post is The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown. I love this author.
Little Island is a darling book about a small island and all of the creatures that live on it. It also talks about how the island is connected to the land underneath bringing in some science and geography! I love the story, plus I love that it has that educational slant that is always my favorite. For our project we did some island sensory play and built our own Little Island.
We have this little tray that the kids play with outside. We used that to make our island. The kids built up a pile of rocks and topped it with some moss that was growing in our yard. They filled it in with dirt to hold it all together and clipped a couple of branches for the trees. They also got out some of their little animals to make the island come to life.
The kids had lots of fun playing with their little island. I also thought this project was a perfect tie-in for my Geography A to Z projects. Check out the Projects I have done in the past. We use the book Geography from A to Z as a guide for these projects.
A is for Atoll & Archipelago, B is for Beach/Bay, C is for Continent, D is for Delta, E is for Earth’s Core, F is for Forest, G is for Google Maps
I love activities like this – where kids can act out the story they just read (or heard). My daughter probably would have just made mud with the materials, lol!
Looks like they had a lot of fun with this activity. Thanks for sharing.
Any activity that includes dirt, water, rocks and random things you can find on the ground would be a hit with my daughter and probably most kids. Add reading and learning to that and you’ve got a hit with most parents :).
