Lessons From Folktales Around the World

Today is the monthly Poppins Book Nook post. This month’s theme is folk tales. What exactly are folk tales?  Folktales are generally tales that have been told orally over time. They are stories passed down through generations of people. They typically have a moral lesson and reflect the values of the culture from which they come. Often there are stories that are similar from one country to the next. This is because all people tend to have similar experiences and when they traveled they shared their stories.  There are a lot of lessons to be learned from these folktales, and that is what we have been doing this month.

World Folktales

For this unit we have been reading from two different books Usborne Stories from Around the World by Heather Amery and also Wisdom Tales by Heather Forest. Both of these books are collections of folktales from around the world with moral lessons from all different cultures. In both books, the stories are very short, only a page or two and are great for quick little lessons with your kids. As we have been reading them, my kids always beg for just one more story! I love books that leave my kids begging for more!

Folktales Around the World from Teach Beside Me

We have been learning the lessons from folktales all around the world. It has been a wonderful way to increase discussion of morals and values that we believe.  I found some simple little flags from around the world to print at Mr. Printables.  We cut out the flags from the different stories as we read them and added them around the outside edge of a paper plate. On the inside of the plate I wrote: “What’s the Moral of this Story?”  Then with each story, the kids learned where it came from and what the moral was. It was a fun and simple way to learn the lessons from folktales all around the world.   Plus, they are learning a little geography and culture in the process!

A few other ways to learn about the folktales would be to have kids act them out for each other & guess the moral and origin of the story.  Also you could teach kids how to write their own folktales with a moral message. This could lead into a great creative writing project!

  1. I love that you were able to explore folktales from around the world and that your kids were begging for more! I think having kids write their own folktale is a great idea.
