Our Literature Rich Homeschool (7th, 5th, 1st and Preschool)

When it comes to a homeschooling style, I have always considered myself to be very eclectic, but if I have to be put into a box, the Charlotte Mason style is probably closest to what we are. Today I want to tell you about our literature rich homeschool and how we run things around here. This year, I will be homeschooling grades 7th, 5th, 1st and a 3-year-old preschooler.

Our Literature Rich Homeschool Choices

For all of my kids we are following a guide called The Well Educated Heart from the website Libraries of Hope. It is a literature-based program that brings together classic books from the “Golden Age” of literature. The creator, Marlene Peterson, has found out of print classics and is re-printing them into a book series. She has compiled them along with other fabulous resources into a monthly themed plan. Each month focuses on a time period in world history and American history and alsip has resources for art, music, literature, nature study, values, and more. It is our first year using it and so far it has been a beautiful fit for us. We are combining that with the Charlotte Mason style (both are quite similar). You can see my post on Literature Based Homeschooling Resources for more info on good resources to learn/teach this way.

Our Preschool Homeschool:

I will start with my littlest since that’s easiest. I have posted a lot lately about preschool and how we homeschool preschool.  You may also have seen my letter of the week series that I have been working on. That’s all for my little sweetie!

I keep it really simple for my little ones. We read a couple of picture books, and add in some activities from Five in a Row. I teach some basic alphabet activities, basic counting activities, and incorporate a lot of hands-on learning tools and some crafty projects. We are also using Reading Eggs from time to time for her. They have a new junior level that she is loving.
