Little Blue Truck Story Play

Today is another Poppins Book Nook post with the theme of Farms. I always love doing these posts, because it gives us a chance to really have fun with books we love. When I was deciding on our farm-themed book for the month, I immediately thought of the book Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle.   It is one of my son’s all time favorites to read. We decided to do some Little Blue Truck story play and reenact the story in our back yard with toys. It was a blast!

Little Blue Truck Story Play

We have read this story SO many times, and pretty much have it memorized. Let me tell you a little about the storyline, though.  The story is about Little Blue Truck driving down the road through the rain. He sees a big green toad as he is driving. He also sees his farm animal friends who all say hello to him with their various animal noises. Then a big yellow dup truck comes through and loudly honks at them to move out of the way. He goes around a curve and gets stuck in a huge mud puddle. He asks for help, but the animals ignore him. Little Blue Truck tries to help but can’t do it on his own. When he calls for help, his animal friends listen. One by one they come to help, and finally the toad comes last and his push is what gets the dump truck out. Then the dump truck thanks them for being nice friends.

So, we got out our trucks and our farm animals and decided to make our own road out back for our little blue truck to drive on. We are all out of sidewalk chalk ( I know amazing), so my daughter got a chunk of charcoal from the fire pit to use to draw our road. We looked through the story for landmarks that we needed to include along the way.

They made some mud for the muddy spot on the road that the dump truck gets stuck in.

When everything was ready, my daughter read the book to my son and he reenacted the book. After that, they just played with it however they wanted to. They had lots of fun and kept on wanting to make the mud puddle bigger. Story play

  1. Love this book for my developmental pre-k students. Where did you find the blue truck? I have been looking and looking and have not been able to find a blue true to go with the story.
