Mapping Animal Migrations

At this time of year, you are likely to see more animals coming around, at least in the northern parts of the country. Animals are beginning their migrations northward. I wanted to make a little lesson to teach my kids and help others teach more about animal migrations, so I created this Mapping Animal Migrations printable pack.

Animal Migration Book

We have this cute book called Going Home: The Mystery of Animal Migration by Marianne Berkes. This book inspired the activity I am sharing today!

In the book Going Home it talks about many different animal migrations. It is a fun one to read to kids to help them understand which animals migrate as well as why they may migrate. There are so many different reasons, including: breeding, food supply, and temperature.

The printable pack I created includes 4 different animals and their migrations patterns. The animals I cover in my pack are the arctic tern, the wildebeest, the monarch butterfly and the sockeye salmon. There is a page for each animal with pictures and some details about why and where they migrate. Each page is available in both color and black & white. Also included in the printable pack is a world map to use to track the migrations of animals. And finally, there is a chart to log different animals that migrate and details about their migration.

Who is This Animal Migration Lesson For?

This is a fun introduction to migration for any science lesson or even for a geography lesson!  It is great for all elementary aged kids and could easily be used for middle grade kids as well.

I did it with my daughter who is in 6th grade and she loved it! We pulled out our large world map that I laminated and used a dry eraser to map the animal migration patterns across the world. She thought this was a cool activity. My two younger kids also wanted to learn more about it, so I was teaching it to my 2nd grader and preschooler as well. All three of them were interested and enjoyed the information as well as the book!
