Organizing Your Homeschool Schedule

This week, I am sharing some tips on homeschool organization starting with our homeschool schedule. Let me start by saying I am a pretty un-organized person. What?! You still want to keep reading?! Well, I wanted to write this series, because after homeschooling for 6 years, I feel like there are a few things I have learned and can share with you.  Today’s post, organizing your homeschool schedule, is the type of organizing I actually enjoy.  This is something I feel works very well in our home.  It is also one of the first things people want to know when they are deciding to homeschool. “What does your homeschool day look like?”  Today I want to show you how our homeschool schedule looks.

Organizing your Homeschool Schedule

Schedule Your Homeschool Time

I have seen lots of different ways that people organize their homeschool day, but this is what has worked for us.  When I schedule our day, I schedule a block of time.  We are doing school exclusively from about 8:30 am through about 1:30 pm.  This is our work time and the kids know this. My family and friends also know this, to they know not to bother us during that time.  I am flexible, of course. There are definitely days when things come up and we have to rearrange our schedule.

Schedule Your Homeschool Subjects

In our home, we have a whiteboard calendar that I update monthly with our school schedule. We have daily subjects and subjects that we do on either Mon./Wed. or Tues./Thurs.  My kids each have a list that they are to complete each day.  They are finished when they finish the list of subjects. Some days, they jump right in when they wake up, other days it seems to drag on for twice as long as normal. 🙂

Our Daily Homeschool Subjects
Math
Grammar
Handwriting
Devotional
Phonics
Spelling
Reading (They each have a book that they read on their own & a few books that we read together)
News (we use the News-O-Matic app)
Trail Guide to Learning
Calendar Time (for my preschooler)
Learning Games (iPad or educational board games)
Piano

Our Monday/Wednesday Subjects
Music Study
Art
Spanish

Our Tuesday/Thursday Subjects
History
Science
Nature Study
Word Roots

We try to do our devotional with breakfast.  Then the kids get to work on their books. They can do them in whatever order they choose. Most things they can do on their own, but I am right there with them to help with whatever is needed. I am usually working on preschool with my son during this time. We try to rotate between doing a few of their books on their own, and doing subjects together. Then, during lunch, we do our read aloud books together.  So that is how we organize our homeschool schedule!  I keep it flexible and simple.

Once our school work is done, the kids spend time doing their chores. When chores and school work are all done they are free to play or have some (limited) technology time. They spend a lot of this time reading or playing outside with neighbor friends.

  1. Thanks for sharing how you organize your homeschooling time. I’m thinking I would like to establish a more self-directed approach for my daughter (i.e. this is what you have to accomplish in this amount of time– what do you want to work on first?)

    Have a great day!

  2. These kind of posts make this homeschooling life seem more doable. We’ve been homeschooling for years and every year it is a struggle! I am a very disorganized person by nature so making and sticking to the schedule I make is an exercise in discipline everyday. My husband is the complete opposite and cannot understand how this can be so difficult whereas I can’t comprehend it ever being easy! Opposites attract, right? 🙂
All that to say, I think this is a great idea for us! My eldest is much more organized and self-motivated than I or my second born, but the list would help keep us all on track. Do you have any out-of-the-home lessons you need to schedule in or work around, and if so how does your schedule change, if at all? We’ve been doing a co-op this year (our first year trying this out) and while I like aspects of it, we get little to no home work done these days.
Thanks for posting your method for scheduling!

    1. So glad it was helpful to you! We do have outside activities that we work around. I try to schedule those things later in the day so it is not during our work time. When they do fall during the earlier part of the day, we just end up reducing some of our read-aloud time, or going a little later.

  3. We will start home school with my son. At this time he will be 3 years old. I would like to know how did you begin preparing your little ones for home school. I would love to hear your approach.
