Have you ever made homemade bird feeders with your kids?
We made some fun and easy bird feeders recently. These homemade bird feeders have no peanut butter in them. I have heard the peanut butter is not good for birds, so I wanted to try one without. This one uses gelatin as a binder.
The kids and I loved doing this together!
How to Make the Bird Feeders:
We made our homemade bird feeders with just birdseed and gelatin!
In a large bowl, pour in 1/2 c. cold water and then sprinkle in 2 packages of unflavored gelatin. Â Let it sit for about 5 minutes. Â Then pour in 1 3/4 c. hot water and 3 c. of birdseed. Â We also added in 1 c. of raisins to give the birds an extra treat!
Pour them into molds that you can easily remove the seed mixture from- it gets very stuck! Â I tried 2 different molds- mini bundt pans and some heart cookie pans. The bundt pans did not come out at all! Â In the heart ones, we made a little hole in the center to thread some yarn through.
I have since purchased some
silicone molds that work best! Â You can push them right out.
Here is the birdseed in our heart molds.
Let them harden completely then thread some yarn through the hole in the center. Hang your homemade bird feeders in a tree that you can watch from the house to see what visitors you get!
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful Spring with your families!
