Swedish Fish Edible Slime

Yes, you read that title right. Can you say yum?!  This edible slime recipe is made from Swedish Fish, one of my all-time favorite candies!

I remember buying big bulk bags of these candies in college during finals week and eating them non-stop. I still love them and usually steal them from my kids’ halloween candy bags.  I have tried making edible slimes from a lot of different candies. I kept meaning to try this one and I am so glad I did. It was deliciously fun!

How to Make Swedish Fish Edible Slime

Here’s what I love most about making edible slime from candy. You do not need very many ingredients. What I also love, is that I don’t need any weird chemicals that make me nervous around little kids who like to put things in their mouth.

Swedish Fish Slime Ingredients:

BIG Bag of Swedish Fish
Some cooking spray
Powdered sugar

Spray your microwave-safe bowl with cooking oil. This helps keep the Swedish Fish from sticking as much to the sides of the bowl. Pour in some candy. We started with about a cup and a half, I believe. The amount does not matter much.

Microwave the candies at 30 second increments. Stir each time. Melted sugar gets really, really hot, so do not touch it while it is cooking. In our microwave, we cooked it 4 times at 30 seconds each for a total of 2 minutes. But definitely watch yours so it does not burn.

When you feel like it it sufficiently melted, stir it a whole bunch. It will start lumpy, but as you stir it, it will smooth out as the candies melt more fully.

Once the slime is fully smooth, add in some powdered sugar. This will help it to get a little more stretchy and smooth, more like slime. I added only a couple of tablespoons. Mix it again until the powdered sugar is fully incorporated.

This Swedish Fish slime has a short window of play. It stays pretty hot, but by the time you have it fully mixed it should be down to a low enough temperature for kids to play with it before it hardens.

Notes about Edible Candy Slimes:

  • Cooked sugar test really hot. Be careful letting kids play with it until the temperature lowers enough!!
  • This is not like normal slime. It is really sticky due to the amount of sugar in it.
  • If kids are going to eat it (which is 100% likely), make sure they wash their hands first before playing with it!
  • It can be saved in a bag, but it will harden. The slime can be re-warmed for a few seconds to make it playable again.
  • Washing the bowl after is a bit of a chore- it takes some soaking.
