Happy Mother’s Day to all you beautiful women!

Today’s Why Homeschool? post comes to us from Shauna.  She wrote a day in the life of a homeschool mom post for us, perfect for Mother’s Day!  I am sure many of you can relate…  If you would like to see more of her, she blogs over at Water Front Learning.  Thanks for your post, Shauna!!

I love reading these sorts of posts by others, and I decided it’s high time I did one of my own.  I’m a mom of 4, and this was a very calm day for us.  There are days of our week where we are gone ALL day, but this is what it looks like when we are home.

Today was a fairly typical day for us, so here’s a peek!

6am-Four comes and joins me in my bed.  I tell him to be still and go back to sleep, it’s not time to be awake.  He wiggles around.

6:30-Three gets up and uses the bathroom.  I inform him that he should go back to bed and try to sleep, it’s NOT time to be awake.  I can hear him tossing and turning in his bed.  Four is still wiggling.
6:45-I send Four back to his bed, for his safety, as his tossing and turning next to me is resulting in the creeping up of violent tendencies.
7am-I can hear them being boys in the other room, but I’m still tired and don’t want to be awake so I yell at them to GO TO SLEEP (because, ya know, that’s ALWAYS so effective.)  This causes meltdown #1 of the day!  WTG Me?  My super sensitive, tenderhearted baby is heartbroken that I’ve raised my voice at him before he’s even out of bed.  Sigh.  I go in and apologize, it’s totally my fault.  I didn’t go to sleep until nearly midnight, even though I know they are often up around 6.  We head out to the living room and get first snacks going.
7:15-I start loading the dishes (from my girls late night snacks,) and since I didn’t cook at all yesterday it’s still not ready to run.  Pass out some more snacks.  I make my bed, and get myself dressed.
7:30-Meltdown #2 is in full swing.  I cannot recall the reason for this one.  I think this is going to be one heck of a day at this rate.  2 full on meltdowns before 8am.
7:45-I set up Three’s workboxes, and start thinking about what I’m going to give Four since his appetite for “school” is off the chart lately!
8am-I realize the trash truck hasn’t come yet, so I start going through the fridge and toss the things that are questionable…I get the bag out JUST as they round the corner to come down our street.  Small victories.  The boys are playing nicely so I do some more cleaning:  I wipe down the appliances in the kitchen, and wipe down some of the cabinets and drawer fronts, I fold a load of towels from yesterday.  I throw in a load of laundry.
8:45-I send the boys to get dressed.
9am-Three asks for some time on my phone, I set the timer on it and let him play.  Four is playing with his dinos, and I spend a few minutes straightening my room.
9:15-Timer goes off, and Three and I start school.  Four gets a turn on my phone, which helps keep him from standing over his brother’s shoulder and doing his work for him.
10am-A snack is given, at the school table.
10:15-The Boo arrives and she and I head out for a run.
11am-3 miles done, a little chit chat with my friend before she heads back home.
11:45-I slide lunch in the oven (roasted tomatoes with mozzarella.)  Three plays a “school” game on my phone–we have a special folder for games that are educational.  I set Four up on starfall.com so I can hop in the shower.  I move the laundry to the dryer.
1pm-Showered, lunch eaten and cleaned up.  Finally enough dishes for a run of the dishwasher. I set Four up with a breathing treatment since he’s still not FULLY well after last weeks hospitalization.  I play Candy Crush.
1:30-I check to make sure I have Three’s t-ball uniform all together, and am pleased to find out that I do (I’m caught up on laundry….hallelujah!)  Four is asking for more school, so we do another activity and then I set him up with a coloring book and some crayons at the school table.  Two watches a French lesson on YouTube.
2pm-I start folding up the laundry.  Three asks to go play up the street (he’s going to be so lost next year when his buddy heads to kindergarten.)
3pm-I take One to her art class, and spend a few minutes talking to The Bestie (since her Two takes art there now, too.)  Come home, waste time on FB.
4pm-Go pick up One, and stop by the convenience store for caffeine and chocolate.
4:30-All the kids head up to play at the neighbor’s.  I have no clue what I did.
5pm-I start dinner (tuna casserole, with rice-special request from Two) and spend 15 minutes sorting out the disaster area known as my Tupperware cabinet.  It’s freeing to have that all organized.  The little kids are back, and they brought friends.  🙂  They play and sit and color.
5:30-I throw dinner in the oven, and start washing up the pans.
6pm-I call the rest of the kids home for dinner.  They get washed up and we eat.  Three gets in his uniform.  I pull out PJ’s for the boys for when we get back.
6:40-We head to the ball park, parking is always a problem so I drop One and Three off at the field, and park a quarter mile away.  Two, Four and I hike over just in time, as the Grasshoppers are just taking the field!  Three is at first base.
7:45-We make it home, Three has a meltdown because he can’t play outside.  I pass around the allergy meds, make sure they have a drink and a trip to the bathroom.  PJ’s on, story CD chosen, lights out.
8:10-I am chomping on a PB Twix, and drinking my water, in my bed with Idol on.  One is finishing her science lesson, and viewing cakes online (planning her birthday party.)
I’m all done for the day.  Most nights I “clock out” immediately after putting the boys to bed.  After a 14 hour day, I’m just done!  I don’t want to do anything productive.
