Women in STEM: Raye Montague Lesson Unit

Have you read the awesome book about the famous woman mathematician, Raye Montague? It’s a good one to read to your kids! If you want to learn more about women in STEM, this is a great place to start. 
Raye Montague worked for the Navy as a clerk and went to night school to learn computer science. She later became an engineer and was the first person to develop a ship using a computer generated system. Her design was revolutionary! Her knowledge of math, computer science and working all those years in the Navy led her to an amazing future.
What I love about Montague’s story is that despite the time period she lived in when women and blacks were not given the same rights as they are now, she pushed through and accomplished amazing things. She never gave up on her dreams and goals even when it seemed impossible. This is the kind of story I want my kids to know about and understand. Women like this need to be remembered and celebrated. There is so much to learn from her.

This 4-page unit briefly covers her life story, has a page about the U.S. Navy, a page to use to interview an engineer, and a lessons learned from Raye page. It’s a great unit to use when learning about women mathematicians and women in STEM.
This unit is based on the amazing book The Girl With a Mind for Math by Julia Finley Mosca. I got this book for free from The Innovation Press and just ADORE this whole series. The unit uses the actual clipart from the illustrator, Daniel Rieley. (See my other post on The Girl Who Thought in Pictures.) I love that the author is educating us about the amazing women scientists in our history. These women have accomplished great things!
