In our hands-on activity, we use pom-poms to represent particles in the nucleus, beads for electrons, and pipe cleaners for electron shells. Students can select an element card, study its structure, and then construct a model of the atom.
Building the models gives kids a physical way to explore chemistry concepts that can otherwise feel very abstract.
You can even hang the finished atoms to create an atomic model mobile or science display!
