urn the rock cycle into a game! 🪨

This printable Rock Cycle Board Game gives kids a hands-on way to learn how rocks form, change, and move through the rock cycle.

The goal is to collect all three major types of rocks—igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic—while traveling around the game board, drawing Cobblestone Cards, and recording changes on your Rock Record Card.

But there’s a catch: your rocks don’t always stay the same!

As players move through the game, their rocks may melt, cool, experience heat and pressure, or be broken apart, causing them to change form just as rocks do in the real rock cycle.

The first player to collect all three rock types and complete a Rock Record Card wins!

Learn the Rock Cycle Through Play

Instead of simply memorizing a rock cycle diagram, kids get to follow rocks as they change from one form to another.

As they play, students reinforce concepts including:

  • The three major rock types
  • Igneous rocks
  • Sedimentary rocks
  • Metamorphic rocks
  • Melting and cooling
  • Heat and pressure
  • Weathering and erosion
  • How one type of rock can change into another
  • The continuous nature of the rock cycle

The center section of the game board focuses specifically on these rock-changing processes, helping kids connect each process with what happens next in the cycle.

Rock Record Cards

Players use their Rock Record Cards to keep track of what’s happening to their rocks throughout the game.

Tip: Laminate the Rock Record Cards and use dry-erase markers! Rocks frequently change form during the game, so this makes it easy to update the cards and use the game again and again.

Perfect For

Use this printable geology game for homeschool science, earth science units, classrooms, science centers, co-op classes, review activities, or hands-on rock and mineral studies.

It’s especially useful after introducing the rock cycle because kids get repeated practice with the vocabulary and processes without another worksheet.
