What really happened to Ichabod Crane?
Turn Washington Irving’s classic short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow into an unsolved literary mystery! In this engaging, one-day literature activity, students become investigators as they examine the disappearance of Ichabod Crane and decide for themselves what really happened on that mysterious night.
Was the Headless Horseman real? Was Brom Bones behind the frightening encounter? Did Ichabod’s superstition get the better of him—or did he survive and simply leave Sleepy Hollow behind?
Students return to the text to reconstruct Ichabod’s final evening, investigate possible suspects and motives, examine physical evidence, distinguish fact from rumor and inference, and evaluate competing theories. Finally, they complete a case report explaining the conclusion they believe best fits the evidence.
There is no single required verdict—the challenge is to build a convincing case using evidence from Washington Irving’s story!
