Pumpkin CSI: Hands-on STEM Mystery for Kids

In this fun pumpkin STEM activity, kids become forensic investigators as they examine clues, compare measurements, and use scientific reasoning to solve the mystery. Six suspects. Four clues. One guilty gourd!

There’s been a break-out at Farmer Green’s pumpkin patch, and we need some young detectives on the case! One mischievous pumpkin has escaped, leaving behind a trail of mysterious evidence. But which pumpkin is responsible?

Designed especially for grades 3–5, Pumpkin CSI: The Pumpkin Patch Break-Out combines math, science, and critical thinking into one engaging fall investigation.

And the best part? You can complete the entire mystery with the printable activity or adapt it into a hands-on investigation using real pumpkins!

A Pumpkin Mystery for Young Detectives

If you need a clever fall or Halloween learning idea, pumpkin science activities will always be exciting! Especially one with a mystery theme.

Six pumpkins are under investigation, but only one is responsible for the great pumpkin patch break-out.

Students receive a suspect lineup and a series of evidence reports. As they investigate, they’ll need to think carefully about the information they uncover.

Some clues involve measurements. Others require careful observation and comparison.

But students won’t solve this case by guessing! They’ll need to collect evidence, consider the possibilities, and explain how they reached their conclusions.

STEM Skills in This Pumpkin Investigation

I love finding ways to make math and science feel like a natural part of play and problem-solving. Rather than completing unrelated worksheets, kids use these skills for a purpose: solving a mystery!

What Makes This Pumpkin STEM Activity Different?

Unlike traditional pumpkin science experiments that focus on pumpkin seeds, plant parts, or sinking and floating, Pumpkin CSI turns science into a mystery! Students become investigators, examine evidence, use observation and measurement skills, and apply critical thinking to solve a pumpkin-themed case.

This fall STEM activity incorporates:

  • Measurement: Comparing heights, circumferences, and numerical information.
  • Math reasoning: Interpreting measurements and evaluating possible matches.
  • Scientific observation: Studying the physical characteristics of different pumpkins.
  • Classification: Comparing similarities and differences.
  • Deductive reasoning: Considering evidence and eliminating possibilities.
  • Critical thinking: Drawing conclusions and explaining why the evidence supports them.

It’s a great way to help students see that science isn’t just about memorizing facts. It’s about asking questions, investigating possibilities, and using evidence to support ideas.

Two Ways to Use This Fall STEM Activity

1. A Low-Prep Printable Pumpkin Mystery

If you’re looking for a quick and engaging fall STEM lesson, the printable version is ready to go. Students work with illustrated suspects and provided evidence to solve the case. It’s perfect for individual work, partner investigations, small groups, or homeschool learning.

The printable mystery takes approximately 20–35 minutes, depending on your students’ ages and how much discussion you include.

2. A Hands-On Investigation with Real Pumpkins

Want to take the science a little further?

Gather a collection of real pumpkins in different sizes, shapes, and colors.

Students can measure their pumpkins, compare physical characteristics, and investigate a teacher-prepared version of the same mystery using their own data.

This variation adds hands-on measurement practice and makes a wonderful fall STEM activity for homeschool groups or classroom science lessons.

The teacher guide includes suggestions for adapting the investigation to real pumpkins.

Pumpkin STEM Activity for Grades 3–5

I designed Pumpkin CSI primarily for 3rd through 5th grade students, but it can be adjusted for different skill levels.

For younger investigators, focus on comparing measurements, observing details, and using evidence to eliminate suspects. Older students can work more independently and provide detailed explanations for their conclusions.

Advanced Challenges for Older Students

Want to make the mystery a little more challenging?

The teacher guide includes optional ideas for extending the math and science without requiring additional worksheets.

Students can explore measurement uncertainty, question whether the evidence tells the whole story, and consider how different scientific assumptions might affect their conclusions.

You can even challenge students to defend different suspects using mathematical evidence and scientific reasoning!

This adds another level of critical thinking for advanced 4th and 5th graders while keeping the original mystery accessible.

Why I Love Mystery-Based Learning

There’s something about solving a mystery that makes kids want to keep going. Instead of asking students to complete a page of measurement problems, we give them a reason to use those skills.

They aren’t just comparing numbers. They’re examining evidence. They aren’t simply describing a pumpkin. They’re investigating a suspect. And instead of circling an answer, they’re explaining how they solved a case. This kind of learning brings together math, science, and problem-solving in a memorable way.

Plus, there’s something pretty funny about treating a runaway pumpkin like a serious criminal investigation!
