Teaching the Letter T: Sounds and Recognition Tips

The letter T makes a crisp, clear /t/ sound as in train, tooth, and turtle. Kids can practice making the /t/ sound by tapping their tongues behind their top teeth.

Tips to teach:

  • Practice “tapping” while tracing the letter in the air

  • Use toy trains to make a “T is for train” game

  • Emphasize tongue placement and use mirrors to let kids observe their mouths while saying /t/

  • Compare T and D to hear the subtle difference between the two

Use a sand tray, ribbon tracing, or shaving cream to reinforce the shape of the letter T!

T is for Totem Pole:

Kids will love making a fun and colorful totem pole using the letter T as a base. Use animal templates, feathers, and bold colors to layer your own totem design. This is a great chance to talk about cultural art and symbolism.

Other craft options:

  • T is for Tree: Make a handprint tree with tissue paper leaves

  • T is for Turtle: Use paper bowls or cardstock to make a textured turtle shell

  • T is for Triangle Collage: Use triangle-shaped scraps to make a mosaic-style collage

Preschool Letter T Snack: T is for Turtle

This cute and healthy turtle snack uses simple ingredients and lets kids help in the kitchen!

How to make it:

  • Use half a green apple for the turtle shell

  • Cut an orange slice in half for the head

  • Add grapes or banana slices for feet

  • Use chocolate chips or raisins for eyes

This snack makes a great follow-up to reading One Tiny Turtle! Pair it with a math activity by counting “feet” or creating patterns with the fruit pieces.
