Learn about the toddler story collage. A perfect busy activity for your little ones!
When my older kids were deep in homeschool lessons, my two-year-old often made things… challenging. If I let him roam free, it meant a full afternoon of cleaning. But I discovered something powerful: if I gave him just a little one-on-one attention and a meaningful activity, our school day went so much smoother—for all of us.
One of my favorite discoveries from that stage was this easy toddler activity I called a story collage—a sweet blend of creativity, early literacy, and connection. It’s a keepsake craft and a storytelling tool in one!

How to Make a Toddler Story Collage
Supplies:
-
Kid-safe scissors (or cut for them)
-
A stack of magazines, old catalogs, grocery ads, or printed clip art
-
Optional: stickers, washi tape, crayons or markers
Instructions:
-
Sit together with a magazine or picture collection. Ask your toddler to point out pictures they like.
-
Cut them out and collect a little pile of favorites.
-
Let your toddler glue the pictures onto a sheet of paper however they like—no right or wrong!
-
Once the collage is complete, make up a silly or sweet story using the pictures as prompts.
-
Retell the story often—or ask your toddler to make up their own version!
My son’s favorite images were all about food and family—how telling is that? He was so proud to carry his collage around, repeating the story we told together.

Educational Benefits of the Story Collage
This activity may seem simple, but it’s packed with learning:
-
Vocabulary & Language Development – As you tell the story, your child is soaking in sentence structure and storytelling skills.
-
Fine Motor Skills – Cutting, gluing, and placing images help strengthen little hands.
-
Creative Expression – There are no rules here—just imagination!
-
Emotional Connection – Kids feel seen and heard when we create alongside them.

Variations for a Modern Twist
If magazines aren’t on hand, try one of these modern versions:
-
Print a page of simple clipart or photos from free image sites
-
Use saved junk mail or old calendars
-
Use stickers or cutouts from printable packs
-
Let older siblings help make themed picture pages for the toddler to use (like animals, foods, transportation, etc.)
-
Laminate their collage to preserve it as a storytelling board

Extend the Learning
You can pair the story collage with a favorite book and build a themed collage around it! For example:
-
After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, make a collage of fruits and foods
-
After reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, make an animal collage
-
After Goodnight Moon, do a bedtime-themed page
- Make a collage with the letters of their name to help teach kids to spell their name with this cute idea from The Stay at Home Mom.

Thanks for posting this! I’ve been wondering the past few days how people do both (I have a 4yo in Kindergarten & a 1yo.) She is not wanting to sit and color any more during school like she had wanted to before. This is a great idea!! I’ll have to store it away for later use 🙂
I really like this idea. My toddler was getting unbearable during school time, so I do “tot school” with him now. I love the pictures your little guy picked out. You can tell he loves his family. 🙂
That is a great idea. My 2 year old has also started tot school so that I can work with my 5 year old and am always on the look out for more activities to do with her.
Love this!! How fun.
Popping in the crew.
This is a GREAT idea! My kiddos would love to do this. I can picture them cutting out all of the snacks they don’t normally get for their collages 😉
Our three are past that toddler stage, but I do remember it. What a fun idea just for him, and sweet that he is enjoying retelling his story.
