Helping Kids with Headaches: Natural Remedies

My son has headaches all the time. He was getting them so frequently that I scheduled an appointment with the neurologist. I was concerned!  I learned a lot, and he is fine, but I wanted to help other parents in the same situation. I am sure there are lots of other parents of kids with headaches who wonder what to do!

Natural Remedies for Kids with Headaches

I was concerned because I do not want to rely on pain relievers forever. We were giving him Tylenol often to help relieve his pain. When I mentioned his frequent headaches to our pediatrician, he suggested the neurology appointment. This got me really scared, honestly!  Was it a tumor?  Is my child sick?

What I discovered was that hormones and stress are both the main reasons kids get frequent headaches.  My son said he was not stressed, however we started noticing the patterns of when his headaches came and they were related to stressful or worrisome incidences. Being an oldest child he tends to have more responsibilities and is called on more often to help out.

How to Help Kids with Headaches:

The neurologist recommended frequent exercise and time outside. I loved that the medicine he gave us was so simple. Vitamin N!  😉  We are typically fairly active as a family, but we made sure that my son was getting regular time outside riding his bike, going on walks or hikes. He has made it a daily routine and it has helped immensely.

The other natural remedy I have been using for him is essential oils. This is one of the BIGGEST reasons I started researching essential oils. I am a new user in the past year and have loved the benefits I have already seen. I do not like being dependent on medicine and did not want my young child to begin that dependence either. I was looking for natural ways to help him that could benefit us long-term. We tried out several different oils, but his favorites have been Peppermint and Clear Head from the Rocky Mountain Oils Kids Line. He also sees benefits from the citrus oils (orange, lemon and grapefruit).

By the way, if you have not yet seen the Kids Line at Rocky Mountain Oils, you have got to look into it. My kids and I are obsessed with it!!  The blends are great and have been so helpful to us since we started using them!  They are all in little roll-on bottles, so they are easy to apply and are all safe. They are truly the best!  (We received the whole kids line for free in exchange for this post. All opinions are mine alone.) We are also using the Concentrate oil often for my ADHD daughter. It’s been great, too!

  1. My son has always gotten bad headaches and some migraines. We noticed it was usually related to dehydration. Especially while playing competitive sports. We always pushed an increase in water and gatorade prior to, during, and after games. And also hot summer days.
