What Is Spin Art?

Spin art is made by placing paint onto paper and spinning it quickly. As the paper spins, the paint moves outward and creates exciting circular patterns.

It’s a fun way to explore movement, patterns, and creativity all at once. I used to have a spin art machine as a kid and it was my favorite!  You can do it at home without the machine, though!

Supplies Needed

How to Make the Spin Art Flowers Craft

Prepare Your Paper

Cut paper circles or squares so they fit inside your salad spinner basket. Cardstock works best because it holds the paint without wrinkling too much.

Add Paint

Place the paper inside the spinner basket. Add small drops or thin lines of paint in several colors. Do not use too much paint or it may puddle.

Try different color combinations like:

  • pink + purple + white
  • yellow + orange + red
  • blue + green + turquoise
  • rainbow colors

Spin!

Close the lid and spin quickly. Open it to reveal your design. Kids love this part. If desired, add one more color and spin again.

  • rounded daisy petals
  • pointed tulip petals
  • long sunflower petals

Build Your Flowers.

Attach stems made from pipe cleaners, straws, or green craft sticks. I used green pipe cleaners, poked it through the center of the flower and made a spiral center.

The Science Behind Spin Art

This project is a fun introduction to motion science.

When the spinner turns quickly, the paint moves outward from the center as it continues moving in a straight path while the paper turns beneath it. This creates the streaked circular patterns you see.

Kids can observe:

  • motion
  • force
  • speed
  • direction
  • color mixing
  • pattern formation

Flower Variations to Try

Rainbow Flowers

Use many bright colors.

Sunflowers

Use yellow petals with a brown center.

Tulips

Use pink or red pointed petals.

Giant Garden Display

Make many flowers and create a mural.

Pollinator Garden

Add paper bees and butterflies.

Tips for Success

  • Use thicker paper for best results.
  • Use small amounts of paint.
  • Let paper dry flat.
  • Make several papers at once for layered flowers.
  • Younger kids may enjoy the spinning more than cutting.

  • spring units
  • plant studies
  • flower life cycle lessons
  • color mixing lessons
  • weather and wind themes
  • STEM + art activities
