Teaching the Letter L: Literacy and Language Tips

The letter L makes a soft and flowing /l/ sound, like in leaf, love, and lemon. It’s a continuous sound, which means you can stretch it out when teaching it. Try making the /l/ sound slowly and ask your child to repeat it.

Encourage your preschoolers to:

  • Stick out their tongues slightly and feel where the sound is made
  • Trace a large letter L with their fingers or a paintbrush
  • Make an “L is for Listen” signal by cupping their ears during story time

Use magnetic letters or letter tiles to build simple L-words during playtime. Sorting activities with pictures of L and non-L items also reinforce sound identification.

Preschool Letter L Snack: L is for Lamb Popcorn Balls

This snack is hands-on, healthy, and includes a fun craft element! We made popcorn balls and turned them into cute lambs by adding printed lamb faces from the Letter L printable pack.

Honey Date Popcorn Balls

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Air pop your popcorn and remove any unpopped kernels.
  2. Blend dates into a paste using a food processor.
  3. Heat the date paste with honey and coconut oil until it forms a gooey mixture.
  4. Mix into the popcorn and scoop into plastic wrap or snack bags.
  5. Form into balls and tape on the lamb face printable.

These are a great low-sugar alternative to typical marshmallow popcorn balls and a great way to practice measuring, scooping, and sensory play!

Favorite Moments from Letter L Week

Our favorite moments this week included making lamb popcorn balls and learning about lightning. The glittery lightning bolts were a big hit, and reading Library Lion sparked a long conversation about how to behave in a library.

We also turned our leaf hunt into a nature walk and made a simple leafy collage. These natural moments bring learning to life and build long-lasting memories.
